An Litir Bheag 322
Bha mi ag innse dhuibh mu Leum MhicGriogair ann an Gleann L矛omhann. Leum Griogair MacGriogair thairis air anns an t-siathamh linn deug. Bha fear eile ann a dh鈥檉heuch ris an aon rud a dh猫anamh. 鈥橲 e teud-chleasaiche, no acrobat, a bha ann. Ach cha deach leis. Chaill e a bheatha.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Chaidh mi suas an gleann bho Leum MhicGriogair. Tha an gleann a鈥 f脿s maol agus fosgailte. R脿inig mi Loch L矛omhann agus ceann an rathaid. An uair sin bha mi a鈥 coiseachd. Bha mi a鈥 dol gu Taigh nam Bodach.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥橲 e sin an t-ainm a tha air an 脿ite air a鈥 mhapa. Ach bidh cuid ga ainmeachadh mar Taigh na Cailliche. Tha e ri taobh Allt Cailliche ann an Gleann Cailliche. Agus tha 鈥渂odach鈥 is 鈥渃ailleach鈥 a鈥 fuireach ann!
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 鈥橲 e a tha ann an Taigh nam Bodach togalach beag 矛osal. Tha e air a dh猫anamh de chlach, fiodh agus sgrathan. Tha e mu dh脿 mheatair a dh鈥檉haid, meatair gu leth ann an leud agus timcheall air leth-mheatair ann an 脿irde. Tha an taigh fosgailte don 脿ird an ear.
Tha ochd clachan anns an taigh. Tha tr矛 de na clachan ainmichte mar Am Bodach, A鈥 Chailleach is An Nighean.
Thuirt mi gu bheil na clachan anns an taigh. Ach chan eil sin f矛or fad na bliadhna. Tha iad na bhroinn anns a鈥 gheamhradh. Tha iad air an toirt a-mach aig 脿m na Bealltainn gach bliadhna. Tha sin aig toiseach an t-samhraidh. Tha iad air an cur ann an cearcall air beulaibh an taighe.
Aig 脿m na Samhna tha iad air an cur a-steach a-rithist airson a鈥 gheamhraidh. Bha na seann daoine a鈥 creidsinn gun cumadh am Bodach 鈥檚 a鈥 Chailleach d矛on air an spr猫idh aca. Nam biodh an spr猫idh s脿bhailte, bhiodh na daoine s脿bhailte.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 Bidh sibh a鈥 smaoineachadh 鈥 feumaidh gu bheil p脿ganachd fhathast be貌 ann an Gleann L矛omhann. Chan eil fhios a鈥檓 mu dheidhinn sin. Ach 鈥檚 d貌cha gu bheil an cleachdadh a鈥 dol air ais gu linn na p脿ganachd. Ma tha sin f矛or, 鈥檚 d貌cha gu bheil Taigh nam Bodach am measg nan l脿raichean p脿ganach as sine ann am Breatainn. The Little Letter 322
I was telling you about MacGregor鈥檚 Leap. Gregor MacGregor jumped over it in the sixteenth century. There was another man who tried to do the same thing. He was an acrobat. But he didn鈥檛 succeed. He lost his life.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 I went up the glen from MacGregor鈥檚 Leap. The glen gets bare and open. I reached Loch Lyon and the end of the road. Then I was walking. I was going to Taigh nam Bodach.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 That鈥檚 what the place is named on the map. But some name it Taigh na Cailliche. It鈥檚 next to Allt Cailliche and in Gleann Cailliche. And there is a 鈥渂odach鈥 and 鈥渃ailleach鈥 living there!
聽聽聽聽聽聽 Taigh nam Bodach is a small, low building. It鈥檚 made of stone, wood and turf. It鈥檚 about two metres long, one a half metres in width and around half a metre in height. The house is open to [facing] the east.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 There are eight stones in the house. Three of the stones are named The Old Man, The Old Woman and The Daughter.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 I said the stones are in the house. But that鈥檚 not true for the whole year. They are inside it in the winter. They are taken out at Beltane time every year. That鈥檚 at the beginning of summer. They are put in a circle in front of the house.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 At Halloween time they are put inside again for the winter. The old people were believing that the Bodach and Cailleach would protect their livestock. If the livestock were safe, the people would be safe.
聽聽聽聽聽聽聽 You鈥檒l be thinking 鈥 paganism must survive in Glenlyon. I don鈥檛 know about that. But perhaps the custom goes back to pagan times. If that鈥檚聽 true, perhaps Taigh nam Bodach is among the oldest pagan sites in Britain.Broadcast
