Hold Me Closer Longdancer: Johnnie Meets Dave Stewart
Johnnie Walker talks to Dave Stewart, who enjoyed his first taste of musical success during the early 70s while fronting the band Longdancer.
Johnnie Walker spins the hits and digs out the rarities from the decade of glitter, glam-rock and The Good Life. This week, he talks to Dave Stewart, who enjoyed his first taste of musical success during the early 70s while fronting the band Longdancer.
Born in Sunderland, Stewart and co-members Matt Irving, Steve Sproxton, Brian Harrison and Charley Smith formed the group in 1971 when Stewart was in his late teens. They were signed to Elton John's Rocket Records and in May 1973 released the single If It Was So Simple, which was taken from the album of the same name. They toured with John in the same year.
When Longdancer broke up in 1977, Stewart formed new group The Catch with Annie Lennox, which later became The Tourists and finally Eurythmics - and one of the UK's most successful pop-rock groups. Stewart has also collaborated with many musicians including Mick Jagger, Jon Bon Jovi, Bryan Ferry and Ringo Starr, and co-wrote Shakespeare's Sister's hit single Stay under a pseudonym. He co-wrote and co-produced the new Stevie Nicks album, as well as Joss Stone's latest album.
Also on the show, a listener recalls their favourite musical memories in My 70s and Johnnie spins three tracks from a classic 70s album.
