Litir 631: Cairidhean agus am Bradan Sligeach

Tha cuid de sheann chleachdaidhean a bu ch貌ir a bhith air an ath-nuadhachadh. Am measg sin, tha a鈥 chairidh. Chithear cairidhean ann an grunn 脿iteachan air a鈥 Gh脿idhealtachd fhathast, ged nach eil cuimhne aig duine be貌 cuin mu dheireadh a bha iad air an cur gu feum. Tha na dh脿 air a鈥 Chomraich. Agus tha feadhainn faisg air Inbhir Nis ann an Linne Fharair 鈥 no am Beauly Firth mar a chanar ann am Beurla).

Mura h-eil sibh e貌lach air an fhacal cairidh, tha e a鈥 ciallachadh balla beag cloiche a bhathar a鈥 togail air tr脿igh. Bhiodh 猫isg a鈥 sn脿mh thairis air a鈥 bhalla aig 脿m l矛onaidh na mara. Nuair a bhiodh an tr脿ghadh ann, chan fhaigheadh na h-猫isg a-mach a-rithist; bhiodh iad air an glacadh air c霉l a鈥 bhalla. Dh鈥檉haodadh daoine dhol s矛os don tr脿igh agus na h-猫isg a thogail. Chan eil d貌igh iasgaich eile cho furasta ris!

Tha feadhainn gu math measail air g脿rraidhean a thogail 鈥 dry-stane dyking mar a chanar ann an Albais. Bidh cuid a鈥 dol gu clasaichean airson na sgilean sin ionnsachadh. Ach cia mheud duine a th鈥 air a bhith an s脿s ann a bhith a鈥 d猫anamh ath-thogail de chairidh? Cha chuala mi fh矛n air gin. Ma tha sibh fh猫in e貌lach air duine no coimhearsnachd a rinn a leithid, nach cuir sibh fios thugam.

Nach biodh e math feadhainn de na seann chairidhean a thogail 脿s 霉r? 鈥橲 d貌cha nach eil an t-iasg cho pailt san latha a th鈥 ann, ach chanainn gun obraicheadh iad fhathast. Co-dhi霉, bhithinn an d霉il gum faighte l猫abag no dha. Anns an t-seann aimsir, ge-t脿, tha mi a鈥 tuigsinn gun robhar a鈥 glacadh bhradan annta! 鈥橲 d貌cha gum biodh cuid de dh鈥檜achdarain an aghaidh pr貌iseact dhen t-se貌rsa seo air s脿illibh sin. Ach is coma leam.

Nise, nuair a chanas mi 鈥渂radan鈥, tha mi a鈥 ciallachadh 鈥淎tlantic salmon鈥. Tha mi ag innse sin dhuibh oir tha 鈥渂radain鈥 de she貌rsachan eile ann. Mar eisimpleir tha am bradan sligeach ann 鈥 鈥渢he scaly salmon鈥 鈥 am bradan sligeach. A bheil sibh e貌lach air? 鈥橲 e sin an t-iasg ris an canar ann am Beurla, sturgeon. Tha am bradan sligeach a鈥 f脿s uabhasach fh猫in m貌r agus tha na h-霉ighean aige gu math luachmhor. 鈥橲 e sin stuth ris an canar caviar.

Tha fios agam gun robhar a鈥 glacadh bradan sligeach ann an cairidhean bho 脿m gu 脿m oir tha e cl脿raichte ann an seann l脿mh-sgr矛obhainn ris an canar am Wardlaw Manuscript. Thachair e ann an Linne Fharair faisg air Leantran, siar air Inbhir Nis, anns a鈥 bhliadhna sia ceud deug is seasgad (1660). Bha an t-iasg deich troighean a dh鈥檉haid.

Aig an 脿m sin, bha gearastan de shaighdearan Sasannach ann an Inbhir Nis 鈥 feadhainn a bh鈥 air a dhol ann 脿s leth Oliver Chromwell. Cheannaich iadsan am bradan sligeach airson ceithir puinnd Shasannach. Thug iad air ais don ghearastan e. Bha iad dhen bheachd gun d鈥 fhuair iad bargan. Ann an Sasainn, bhiodh e a鈥 cosg co-dhi霉 deich puinnd Shasannach.

Anns an latha an-diugh, thathar a鈥 smaoineachadh gum faighte suas ri ochd m矛le not airson iasg mar sin! Dh鈥檉haodadh gum biodh cairidh gu math prothaideach 鈥 fhad 鈥檚 a gheibhte cead bhon bhanrigh airson an t-iasg a reic oir 鈥檚 ann leathase a tha gach bradan sligeach a th鈥 air a ghlacadh ann an uisgeachan Bhreatainn.

Abairtean na Litreach

tha cuid de sheann chleachdaidhean a bu ch貌ir a bhith air an ath-nuadhachadh: there are some old practices that should be renewed; cuin mu dheireadh a bha iad air an cur gu feum: when they were last put to use; tha na dh脿 air a鈥 Chomraich: there are two in Applecross; aig 脿m l矛onaidh na mara: at the time of the incoming tide; air an glacadh air c霉l a鈥 bhalla: caught behind the wall; chan eil d貌igh iasgaich eile cho furasta ris: there is no other method of fishing that is as easy; tha feadhainn gu math measail air g脿rraidhean a thogail: some people really like building stone dykes; mar a chanar ann an Albais: as it is called in Scots; cha chuala mi fh矛n air gin: I haven鈥檛 heard of any myself; chanainn gun obraicheadh iad fhathast: I reckon they鈥檇 still work; bhithinn an d霉il gum faighte l猫abag no dha: I would expect a flounder or two to be obtained; gun robhar a鈥 glacadh bhradan annta: that salmon were caught in them; gum biodh cuid de dh鈥檜achdarain an aghaidh pr貌iseact dhen t-se貌rsa seo: that some landlords would be against a project of this type; is coma leam: I鈥檓 indifferent [to that]; cl脿raichte ann an seann l脿mh-sgr矛obhainn: recorded in an old manuscript; deich troighean a dh鈥檉haid: ten feet long; bha gearastan de shaighdearan Sasannach: a garrison of English soldiers; feadhainn a bh鈥 air a dhol ann 脿s leth: some who had gone there on behalf of; ceithir puinnd Shasannach: four pounds Sterling (as opposed to Scots); thathar a鈥 smaoineachadh gum faighte suas ri ochd m矛le not: it is thought that up to eight thousand pounds would be obtained; fhad 鈥檚 a gheibhte cead bhon bhanrigh: as long as permission were obtained from the queen.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

Although we tend to think of bradan as meaning 鈥渟almon鈥 (in some parts of the G脿idhealtachd 鈥渂reac鈥 is used for the same species), there are other types of bradan. Bradan sligeach (鈥渟caly salmon鈥) is also used for the mullet, a more common fish than the sturgeon in British waters. And other names recorded for the sturgeon include bradan bacach (鈥渉alting salmon鈥), bradan ce脿rr (鈥渓eft sided salmon鈥), bradan ge脿rr (鈥渟hort salmon鈥) and bradan leathann (鈥渂road salmon鈥). However bradan leathann is more commonly (and sensibly) used for the halibut, while the turbot is 产谤补诲补苍-产谤脿迟丑补苍 (鈥渜uern-stone like ie round salmon鈥).

Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach

鈥檚 ann leathase a tha gach bradan sligeach: every sturgeon belongs to her.
