Sean Rafferty presents concert highlights from the 2011 West Cork Chamber Music Festival, including Brett Dean's Voices of Angels and Mozart's String Quintet in D, K593.
Sean Rafferty visits Bantry House and St Brendan's Church in the West Cork town of Bantry. Today's concert recorded at the West Cork Chamber Music Festival features the festival's composer-in-residence, Brett Dean, who is also an esteemed viola player, as both composer and performer. He is joined in the library of Bantry House by violinist, Tai Murray; cellist ,Christian Poltera; Niek de Groot, double bass and C茅dric Tiberghien, piano, for a performance of his piece titled "Voices of Angels". The score is prefaced with lines by Rilke, "Angels (it's said) are often unable to tell whether they move / amongst the living and the dead... Brett Dean then joins the festival's hosts, the RTE Vanbrugh Quartet for a performance in St Brendan's Church of Mozarts's Quintet for Strings in D K. 593, which was written in 1790, at the beginning of a final flourish of composition that occupied Mozart during his final year.
