Sean Rafferty is at Bantry House in the south west of Ireland to introduce the 2011 West Cork Chamber Music Festival.

Today's concert begins with the Horn Trio in E flat Op. 40 by Brahms. Brahms played the horn and it is believed that the slow movement of this work was a lament on the death of his mother. The Piano Quartet in E flat op. 47 was composed in 1842, the year which has become known as Schumann's Chamber Music Year. During the spring and summer Schumann studied quartets by Mozart, Beethoven, and Haydn and during the last six months of the year he composed this Piano Quartet, three string quartets, the Piano Quintet and the
