Paul Gambaccini presents past and present tracks from the US charts. This week's featured hitmakers include Bobbie Gentry, Whitney Houston, and he pays tribute to Edmundo Ros.

Paul Gambaccini presents tracks from this week's US charts and hits from the last six decades.

In the feature Baby What A Big Surprise [they really were Number One albums] we hear the title track of Ode To Billie Joe by Bobbie Gentry, an unknown artist who knocked The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band off number one. We also hear You Learn by Alanis Morissette from her 1995 album Jagged Little Pill.

In the regular feature The First Time Ever I Saw Your Face, songs are featured from LPs by Poco and Whitney Houston. It's Not The Same Old Song highlights Tighten Up by Archie Bell & The Drells and a different song with the same title by The Black Keys.

In A Matter Of Life And Death Paul celebrates the birth on this date in 1943 of saxophonist and Grammy-winning arranger for Blood, Sweat & Tears, Fred Lipsius. We also hear The Wedding Samba by Edmundo Ros as a tribute to the recently deceased artist, who died at the age of 100. We've Only Just Begun by Carpenters and What a Diff'rence A Day Makes by Dinah Washington are this week's featured songs from the Grammy Hall Of Fame Singles list.

Our R&B Number Ones are from 1988 - Giving You The Best That I Got by Anita Baker - and this week - Fool For You by Cee Lo Green and Melanie Fiona. We hear Country Number Ones from 1980 and now by Kenny Rogers and Toby Keith. This week's past and present Rock Number Ones are by Randy Newman and Bush.

Justin Bieber becomes the first under-eighteen-year-old to score three number one albums as his latest Under The Mistletoe enters the chart at the top. On the singles side, We Found Love by Rihanna and Calvin Harris is still Number One.
