Young David's happy childhood is blighted when his widowed mother remarries and his brutish stepfather dispatches him to a grim school, and then sets him to work in a warehouse. Eventually David resolves to run away to find his only surviving relative, a daunting old aunt who is only a dim and forbidding memory.
