Saving Ardroy

Bill Whiteford finds out how one man saved a popular outdoor education centre offering unique opportunities for children.

When Fife Council closed its Ardroy Outdoor Education Centre in Cowal July 2011, many parents feared children would no longer be able to enjoy the kind of unique outdoor educational opportunity it offered.
But they reckoned without Dunoon pensioner George Bruce, who with his wife Isla began to raise support to try to keep the centre running, despite Fife having decided it was no longer economically viable.
With the backing of staff including head of centre Phil Thompson, they reopened Ardroy as a charitable trust.
The first children came to the new Ardroy in November 2011 and we were there to record their thoughts, and George's feelings, on the mammoth task ahead.
Presenter Bill Whiteford has followed the centre over its first school year.
