The Story Walls
Documentary following three Belfast mural artists as they undertake to create a travelling mural that reflects the mood of the local community in south east London.
Belfast mural tradition heads for London.
Summer 2012: three mural artists from Belfast are commissioned to do a very unusual job in south east London. The artists - two republican and one unionist, working alongside six local schoolchildren - have just four days to create a travelling mural that reflects the mood of the local black community. Relationships with the Metropolitan Police have remained poor since the protracted saga of bringing Stephen Lawrence's killers to justice, and the three artists from Northern Ireland soon find themselves immersed in a deeply troubled community, with uncanny parallels to Northern Ireland in the dark days. Tension runs high as the Belfast men grapple with the best way to interpret a struggle that is essentially alien to them. As artist Mark Ervine says, 'this was the most difficult mural I've ever worked on'. Finally the finished work is revealed to Doreen Lawrence, Stephen's mother. What will she make of an Ulster-style mural about black London issues?
