On the 18th of December 1862 the district of Ness in Lewis suffered its worst fishing tragedy in living memory with the loss of thity-one fishermen. They had gone to lift the nets which they had set the previous evening and the weather was fine as they left port. It changed quickly and dramatically, however, and tragedy ensued. Norman Smith is a local historian who has extensively researched the subject of fishing tragedies and, a number of years ago, John Maclean recorded Norman recalling the loss of life at sea from 1836 to 1900.
