Last year just over 67,000 children were being looked after by local authorities. The number is increasing at a time when councils are facing major budget cuts. It's meant tough decisions on the best way to look after children who need care. Nikki Fox looks at the consequences for children in the East.

David Whiteley investigates the increasing popularity of extreme physical endurance tests by taking part in the Tough Mudder in Northamptonshire.

Children's home closures

A move by Essex County Council to close children's homes has been criticised by experts and parents.

In the past year, all 12 of the mainstream care homes run by the council have closed as part of a move to focus on foster care and privately-run homes.

But Councillor Ray Gooding, the council's cabinet member for children's services, said foster placements were the closest alternative to a child living with his or her own family.
