Matt’s mystical tour
Matt Baker takes a journey down the coast, taking in two of the most magical and mythical sites in North Cornwall - St Nectan’s Glen and Tintagel Castle. James and the tiny moss hunt
James Wong visits the Phoenix United Mine on Bodmin Moor. This area’s rich copper mining past has earned it World Heritage status, but James is here to find a plant that usually goes unnoticed, mainly because it is very rare and extremely hard to spot. The derelict mine is full of metal deposits that are usually toxic to plants, but which provide the perfect habitat for Cornish Path moss – one of Britain’s rarest plants. James finds himself up close and personal with the snow and mud in his search for this very special moss.Ìý But will his efforts pay off?

Tom’s tidal power
It is claimed that twenty percent of the UK’s electricity could be generated by the sea if we harnessed the power of our tides. But, at the moment, all we get is a thousandth of one percent. Tom Heap heads to the Orkney Islands to find out about the development of turbines that can generate electricity from the movement of the sea. Then he heads to South Wales, where he learns about controversial plans to develop a huge tidal barrage across the Severn Estuary. On its own this barrage could generate five percent of the UK’s electricity. But at what cost to the surrounding environment and the wildlife that relies on it?

Adam and the rare breed rams
On his farm this week, Adam Henson is tending to his flock of rare breed rams. Now that most of his ewes are in lamb, the rams have been separated and live together. Adam looks at some of the breeds that have helped change and shape our landscape. One of his favourite breeds, the Manx Loaghtan is having some problems with his horns, so Adam has to use his handsaw to cure the problem. Then there’s another animal in need of some TLC. One of Adam’s Gloucester old spot boars needs treatment for a bad back and shoulder, so he invites animal physiotherapist Sarah Stafford to the farm to work her magic.

Canine cliff rescue
Her Majesty’s Coastguard deals with tens of thousands of incidents each year. In 2012 there were more than 335 call-outs just in North Cornwall. In the summer months, when many Cornish beaches are no-go zones for dogs, the coastal path becomes a haven for dog walkers. But the cliffs can also prove perilous. James meets the owners of one lucky dog, Ted, and the coastguard volunteers who helped saved him when he fell from the path. Then James puts his own life in the hands of the volunteers as he learns more about their skills – forcing him to face his fear of heights!
