Litir 727: Am Fear a Fhuair na Tr矛 Comhairlean - P脿irt 2

Th貌isich mi air an st貌iridh thraidiseanta Am Fear a Fhuair na Tr矛 Comhairlean an t-seachdain sa chaidh. B鈥 e a鈥 chiad chomhairle 鈥 gabh an rathad fada glan, seach an rathad goirid salach. Nuair a th脿inig ar caraid agus am marcaiche don ghobhal anns an rathad, ghabh am marcaiche an rathad goirid. Ach thachair e ri robairean agus ghoid iad a h-uile sgillinn a bh鈥 aige. Leis gun robh am fear eile air an rathad fada a ghabhail, cha robh trioblaid sam bith aige.

听听听听听听听听听听听 R脿inig e taigh san anmoch. Bha seann duine a鈥 fuireach ann, agus boireannach 貌g. Chuimhnich e an d脿rna comhairle 鈥 gun a bhith a鈥 cur seachad oidhche ann an taigh far an robh seann duine agus bean 貌g. Ghabh e biadh aca, agus bha iad a鈥 seanchas tacan. An uair sin, dh鈥櫭╥rich e airson falbh. Cha robh e a鈥 dol a chur seachad na h-oidhche an sin.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Chaidh e gu sabhal an taighe, far an deach e am falach am broinn cruach-fe貌ir. Th脿inig feadhainn eile don taigh. Thachair gun deach iad don t-sabhal cuideachd. Bha fear dhiubh an taic ris a鈥 chruach-fhe貌ir. Bha siosar beag ann am p貌caid ar caraid. Leis an t-siosar, ghe脿rr e b矛deag 脿 cota an fhir eile. Cha d鈥 fhairich am fear eile dad.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Dh鈥櫭╥rich ar caraid nuair a th脿inig solas an latha. Nuair a r脿inig e am baile faisg air l脿imh, bha 霉praid mh貌r ann. Dh鈥檉haighnich e de chuideigin gu d猫 bha a鈥 dol. Dh鈥檌nnseadh dha gun robh dithis she貌ladairean ann an gr猫im. Bha iad fo amharas gun do mhuirt iad seann duine ann an taigh faisg air l脿imh an oidhche roimhe. Thuig am fear gun robhar a鈥 bruidhinn mun taigh far an robh e fh猫in an oidhche roimhe.

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥楢m faod mi a dhol a choimhead a鈥 ghnothaich?鈥 dh鈥檉haighnich e.

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥楩aodaidh, gu dearbh,鈥 thuirt fear ris, 鈥楾ha iad ann an taigh na c霉irte sh矛os an rathad.鈥

听听听听听听听听听听听 Chaidh am fear gu taigh na c霉irte 鈥檚 chaidh e a-steach. Bha fear an sin a鈥 d矛teadh nan se貌ladairean bochda. Bha ar caraid dhen bheachd gun robh iad neoichiontach. Nuair a bha na se貌ladairean ann an cunnart gum biodh iad air an d矛teadh airson murt, dh鈥櫭╥rich e na sheasamh. Dh鈥檉haighnich e an toireadh iad cead dha beagan a r脿dh mun ch霉is. Fhuair e cead fianais a thoirt seachad.

听听听听听听听听听听听 Thuirt e nach iad na se貌ladairean a bu choireach ris a鈥 mhurt an oidhche roimhe. Dh鈥檉haighnich iad gu d猫 an dearbhadh a bh鈥 aige. Thuirt e nach robh iadsan air l脿rach a鈥 mhuirt, ach gun robh e an d霉il gun robh cuideigin eile anns a鈥 chuideachd an l脿thair. Mh矛nich e mar a thug e b矛deag 脿 c貌ta an fhir le siosar.

听听听听听听听听听听听 鈥楾ha i agam an seo,鈥 thuirt e. 鈥楧uine sam bith a fhreagras a鈥 bh矛deag seo ann an c霉l a鈥 ch貌t鈥 aige, sin an duine a bh鈥 ann a-raoir.鈥

听听听听听听听听听听听 Bha am fear ciontach an l脿thair. Rinn e airson teicheadh, ach chaidh stad a chur air. Dh鈥檉heuch iad a鈥 bh矛deag cl貌 air a ch貌ta gus, gu dearbh, b鈥 e sin am p矛os a chaidh a ghearradh dheth. 鈥橲 e fear de mhuinntir an 脿ite a rinn am murt, agus bha na se貌ladairean gu tur neoichiontach. Sh脿bhail ar caraid am beatha leis gun do lean e an d脿rna comhairle a fhuair e. Agus an treas comhairle 鈥 uill thig sin am b脿rr an-ath-sheachdain.

the other man didn鈥檛 feel anything; dh鈥檉haighnich e de chuideigin gu d猫 bha a鈥 dol: he asked somebody what was happening; gun robh dithis she貌ladairean ann an gr猫im: that two sailors were under arrest; fo amharas gun do mhuirt iad X: under suspicion that they murdered X; gun robhar a鈥 bruidhinn mun taigh far an robh e fh猫in: that the house where he was himself was being talked about; taigh na c霉irte sh矛os an rathad: the court house down the road; fhuair e cead fianais a thoirt seachad: he obtained permission to give evidence; dh鈥檉haighnich iad gu d猫 an dearbhadh a bh鈥 aige: they asked him what proof he had; l脿rach a鈥 mhuirt: the site of the murder; duine sam bith a fhreagras a鈥 bh矛deag seo ann an c霉l a鈥 ch貌t鈥 aige, sin an duine a bh鈥 ann a-raoir: any man, the back of whose coat fits this piece, that鈥檚 the man that was there last night.

Puing-ch脿nain na Litreach

R脿inig e taigh san anmoch: he reached a house during the evening. You will be familiar with anmoch as an adjective meaning 鈥榣ate in the day鈥 but note that is also a noun meaning 鈥榚vening, night鈥. It is the opposite of moch, which is an adjective meaning 鈥榚arly in the day鈥 but can likewise be used as a noun meaning 鈥榚arly morning, dawn鈥. Dh鈥櫭╥rich mi sa mhoch 鈥業 rose at dawn鈥. But the use of both these words as nouns is tending to go out of fashion and might be viewed as 鈥榯raditional鈥 usage, particularly suited for storytelling.

Gn脿thas-cainnt na Litreach

gun a bhith a鈥 cur seachad oidhche: not to spend a night.
