Effie Martin was born in Glasgow and brought up in Shader, on the west coast of Lewis. On leaving school at 14 she worked in the County Hotel in Stornoway, earning less than 拢3 per month. When war was declared she then began work in the NAAFI in Stornoway and then in Auchinleck, Ayrshire.
