Reviews of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Reviews of The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug

Claudia: I thought it was tremendous. That鈥檚 probably because I鈥檓 not a purist. I saw the first one and I had to go twice because I had two naps, and when I woke up from my second nap they were still washing up and they had broken into song! They were never leaving the Shire! And in this one they go down barrels, and it鈥檚 just propelling. I like Evangeline lily and I like the love story.

Danny: This is an altogether better kind of Hobbit. There is a lack of half-hour scenes of washing up.听 Instead you have this full-blooded action romp. As a spectacle it is spectacular. At last there is a sense of energy and momentum.

Catherine: I鈥檓 a big Tolkien nerd, I think there will be a lot of people who are with me in feeling that this is really Peter Jackson鈥檚 film and not Tolkien鈥檚 film. This isn鈥檛 epic and brilliant, this is just a fun trip out for the kids.

Claudia: It鈥檚 a tense watch. We all love it.听

Danny: I鈥檓 not a man who is frequently left speechless but I was by this film. I think it鈥檚 phenomenal. The last two or three minutes are genuinely the most unforgettable I鈥檝e seen on any kind of screen. I鈥檓 a very big fan. This is Redford鈥檚 movie.

Catherine: I love this film. I wasn鈥檛 necessarily expecting to. You hear it鈥檚 a film with no dialogue, and it鈥檚 going to be 鈥渃ompelling鈥 and you think, 鈥渁ctually I鈥檓 going to be bored but it鈥檚 well made,鈥 but no, it鈥檚 actually edge-of-your-seat stuff. An incredible performance from Robert Redford.

Reviews of Fill The Void

Reviews of Fill The Void

Claudia: It was incredibly claustrophobic to watch, in the same way as All is Lost.

Danny: I think you expect Fill The Void to be a slightly different movie. You have this eighteen year old girl in a very devout community. We鈥檝e seen a million coming of age movies where the girl would rebel and freak out and run away and become Lady Gaga. It鈥檚 not an expos茅, it鈥檚 not propaganda: it鈥檚 somewhere in between. It鈥檚 a very absorbing movie.

Catherine: it鈥檚 a technically very accomplished film. I think she has a real way with framing a shot, she鈥檚 coaxed incredible performances from her actors. I鈥檇 like to see her next film not about Orthodox Judaism. As interesting as it is I feel like she is so within that world, it would be nice to see her talent brought to bear on something completely outside of it.
