Britpop: A Very British Pop
Was Britpop the last quintessentially British music scene? Stuart Maconie looks back 20 years to ask why the Britpop crop were suddenly re-evaluating what it was to be British.
In 1992 Morrissey appeared on stage draped in a union jack and was hounded for being a racist. Fast forward five years and the flag is everywhere from Noel Gallagher's guitar to Geri Halliwell's mini dress. What had changed? Why was there this new found faith in the power of British pop?
20 years on Stuart Maconie traces the course of Britpop from the back rooms of Camden to the front room of Downing Street. We'll see how this new crop of bands were re-evaluating what it meant to be British, what it said about the country at the time and it's legacy on British music today.
