Islay and Jura special

This week Dougie, Sarah and Euan are exploring the islands of Islay and Jura. Less than a mile separates the islands but they are strikingly different. Islay is Scotland鈥檚 fifth largest island and is home to three thousand people. The land is fertile with lush pastures sustaining cattle and sheep. Jura is much wilder than Islay and is dominated by the hills known as the Paps of Jura. It is home to just two hundred people.

Sarah meets two families who live and work on Jura.聽Andrew and Claire Fletcher moved back to Jura seven years ago. They are the fifth generation to take on Andrew鈥檚 18,000 acre family Estate.聽Sarah also meets a young crofter who has created a new business on the family croft.

Chough

Euan visits the remote Oa estate on Islay in search of one of Scotland鈥檚 rarest birds. The Chough is a member of the Crow family but there are only sixty breeding pairs. The RSPB are running the Oa estate in such a way as to encourage the numbers of Chough to grow.

The Gulf of Corryvreckan

The Gulf of Corryvreckan

Dougie joins a team of scientists researching the dangerous waters of the Gulf of Corryvreckan. The narrow channel creates huge tidal surges that generate huge standing waves and the third largest whirlpool in the world. The research will help to create new navigational charts for a stretch of water that has been feared by seafarers for centuries.

Kilchoman Distillery

Islay is famous throughout the World for its Distilleries producing renowned Malts such as Bowmore and Laphroig. The first new distillery on Islay in over a hundred years opened five years ago. It is unique in that all the Barley used in the Whisky making process is grown on Islay. Euan gets a taste of the latest Malt in the Islay collection.
