Pause for Thought
From Reverend Rob Gillion, Rector of Holy Trinity Church and St Saviours

Today the removalists as the Australians call them arrived bright and early just as I left to come here. All our furniture and most of our belongings are going on ahead of us as we prepare to emigrate to Australia. We have been very busy culling our possessions and – do we need this or that. I have been sitting in the middle of old letters and papers, notes on passed sermons, old books well worn clothes trying to get rid of the detritus of life. But every once in a while I have stopped sorting and discarding to read an old diary which tells of a very special time in our lives, or a book which has touched my soul, or my favourite old velvet jacket,Ìý and yesterday a wedding dressÌý Janine last wore forty years ago!!Ìý I have found some real pearls of great price not in monetary terms but in wonderful memories. The discoveries have been both joyful and painful, each item telling a story.
Ìý
My faith in God mostly encourages me to let goÌý of the past and focus on the sanctity of the present moment, and look forward with hope to the next adventure. But IÌý am of course sad to say farewell to my Mum but making the most of our time before we leave. SheÌý struggles to remember what happened yesterday. But telling her all about our future trip to Australia provides a sudden opening for a flood of good memories. For she sailed to Australia inÌý 1928 when she was 5 years old with her mum and dad when my Grandpa went off from the east end of London to be a priest missioner in Australia. I have discovered a parish magazine with an article written by my Grandpa justifying his adventure into the outback. He explains it was an extraordinary call of God and he had no choice to respond. Same here Grandpa!Ìý

In amongst the clutter and mess of our lives there are often glimpses of beauty and wonder. Jesus so often invited his disciples to remember the special moments they had shared together, through his teaching and their experience in his presence. Later as they sifted through those memories theyÌý discovered the pearls of great price which became the stories of Jesus in our new testament. They discarded their worries and anxieties and stopped still to pause for a moment and catch a glimpse of the treasures that lie hidden in the complexities of life.
Ìý
So in the packing I have hidden a few special memories which may not be practically useful but will lift my spirit when I am far from home.
