Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Reverend Sharon Grenham-Toze, Anglican Priest and Prison Chaplain:

Ìý

It looks like it’s quite a week for travelling. Yesterday Rob was telling us about going to Australia. This morning the studio’s buzzing with the excitement of this amazing weekend in Monaco. And even I’m getting in on the act, because this afternoon I’m driving up to Scotland, and my plan is to climb Ben Nevis tomorrow.

Ìý

It’ll be a bit of a break from my work, which, as you know, is being the chaplain of Bedford Prison. One of the most famous former residents of what was known in the late 1600s as Bedford County Gaol was someone who had a thing or two to say about travelling: the preacher and writer John Bunyan. Perhaps his greatest, and certainly his best known, work, which he wrote whilst in prison for defying the religious authorities, is the Pilgrim’s Progress. This is a wonderful imagining of a man called Christian, and his journey through life. He meets all kinds of difficulties and enemies on the way, has to draw deep on his stores of courage and faith, and has to be ready for unexpected things to happen at a moment’s notice. After many trials he finally reaches the Celestial City and is welcomed with joy within its shining walls.

Ìý

It’s a great story, and of course it’s also a message about living a life of faith. But one of the things that always struck me about Christian’s journey was how much of a difference it made when people helped him, encouraged him, urged him on when he was tired or scared or ready to give up.

Ìý

I know when I’m climbing that mountain tomorrow I’ll be glad for the company of my partner, as well as the friendly words of those we meet on the way up or down. And there are plenty of people today, not least those youngsters who are being helped through Children in Need, who are making a difficult journey in life in one way or another - our generosity, kindness and support might just get them a few extra steps along the way.

Ìý

So as we all set off on our various journeys, I think the words of the author Tim Cahill would be good ones to take with us: ‘a journey is best measured in friends rather than miles.’
