The Old Testament Reading

A reading from the prophet Jeremiah

Thus says the LORD of hosts, the God of Israel, to all the exiles whom I have sent into exile from Jerusalem to Babylon: Build houses and live in them; plant gardens and eat what they produce.听 Take wives and have sons and daughters; take wives for your sons, and give your daughters in marriage, that they may bear sons and daughters; multiply there, and do not decrease.听 But seek the welfare of the city where I have sent you into exile, and pray to the LORD on its behalf, for in its welfare you will find your welfare. (Jeremiah 29: 4-7)

This is the word of the Lord

Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to Matthew
All:听 Glory to you, O Lord.

Jesus said to his disciples: 鈥榊ou are the salt of the earth; but if salt has lost its taste, how can its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything, but is thrown out and trampled underfoot.听
鈥榊ou are the light of the world. A city built on a hill cannot be hidden. No one after lighting a lamp puts it under the bushel basket, but on the lamp stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.鈥櫶 (Matthew 5: 13-16)

The Sermon:听 The Revd Canon Dr Simon Taylor

鈥淪eek the welfare of the city鈥 That is the message of the prophet Jeremiah to the people of Israel in exile in Babylon.听 鈥淪eek the welfare of the city鈥, pray for it and be a full part of that place.听 Jeremiah鈥檚 call to his people is a vision of a society in which everyone contributes and in which everyone is valued.听 It is a vision of a society ordered by the common good, a society in which all people have a share, where no-one is left behind and where care for one another is part of the fabric of life together.听 This may seem far from the world in which we live when we read an Oxfam report that the five richest families in this country own more than the total wealth of the poorest fifth of the population.听 Or where Church Action on Poverty report that between 45 and 100 billion pounds are lost to our common life each year through evading and avoiding tax.听 Jeremiah tells us to 鈥榮eek the welfare of the city.鈥 Is this just a prophetic pipedream, an unrealisable utopia?听 What would it take to bring it to reality?听 The answer, says Jesus, is people who are dug in to society and bring the life of God to those around them.听 This is what Jesus means by being the 鈥渟alt of the earth鈥.听听 Too often we read this and think that we are to be elegant salt-cellars, sprinkled gently onto food to preserve it and to add flavour.听 To be a Christian would then be to make life just a little bit more interesting.听 And that is not at all what Jesus is talking about.听听 The clue is in his warning that salt can lose its saltiness.听 The salt that we use in cooking, sodium chloride, cannot lose its saltiness.听 It remains salt, whether it is diluted or cooked.听 Ask anyone who has spilled the salt-cellar into the cooking, or drunk a glass of salt water 鈥 this salt retains its saltiness.听 Jesus is not talking about condiments.听 He is speaking about farming.听 The salt he speaks of is the 鈥榮alt of the earth鈥.听 Potash, or some other mineral fertiliser.听 It might help us get the meaning if we think of it as fertiliser.听 It is not to be sprinkled on the top of the soil to make it a little tastier.听 Rather it is to be dug deeply into the soil so that it will be fertile and provide nourishment for all kinds of plants.听听 Christians are, therefore, to be the salt of the earth, bearing the life of God to those around them. That is why Christians 鈥 working with others - in Buxton and around the country are providing food-banks, so that the most vulnerable can put food on the table.听 That is why Derby Cathedral and other churches, in Derby and around the country, opened their doors last winter so that the homeless could have a roof over their heads and a safe, warm place to sleep.听 That is why Christians might not oppose reforming an ageing and dysfunctional welfare system but they will insist that the poor and the vulnerable are spoken about in a truthful and respectful manner.听听 That is also why Christians do not, indeed must not, regard working and praying for the common good as an addition to their work.听 It is central to the Christian calling.听听 The salt of the earth is dug in; it is patient and it is generous.听听 It is there for everyone.
Today in this service we receive broken bread and poured-out wine which are for us the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ.听 We receive the one who gave himself away that we might live.听 It is by being the salt of the earth that Christians follow the way of Jesus and the call of the prophet Jeremiah to 鈥渟eek the welfare of the city鈥.听 Amen.

Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who, in your tender mercy, gave your only Son our Saviour Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption; who made there by his one oblation of himself once offered a full, perfect and sufficient sacrifice, oblation and satisfaction for the sins of the whole world; he instituted, and in his holy gospel commanded us to continue, a perpetual memory of his precious death until he comes again.听 Hear us, merciful Father, we humbly pray, and grant that we receiving these gifts of your creation, this bread and this wine, according to your Son our Saviour Jesus Christ鈥檚 holy institution, in remembrance of his death and passion, may be partakers of his most blessed body and blood;

Who, in the same night as he was betrayed, took bread and gave you thanks; he broke it and gave it to his disciples, saying: Take, eat, this is my body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of me.听
In the same way, after supper, he took the cup; and when he had given thanks, he gave it to them, saying: Drink this, all of you; this is my blood of the new covenant, which is shed for you and for many for the forgiveness of sins.听 Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.听听 Amen.

Let us pray with confidence as our Saviour taught us:

All:听 Our Father, who art in heaven, hallowed be thy name; thy kingdom come; thy will be done; on earth as it is in heaven.听 Give us this day our daily bread, and forgive us our trespasses, as we forgive those who trespass against us.听 And lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.听 For thine is the kingdom, the power and the glory, for ever and ever.听 Amen.

Jesus is the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world.听 Happy are those who are called to his supper.

All:听 Lord, I am not worthy to receive you, but only say the word, and I shall be healed.
