Pause For Thought

With Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister

How close to greatness can you get? I was talking to one of the musicians at my church about his instrument. It鈥檚 a viola da gamba, it looks like a small cello, and I鈥檇 never seen one before. He told me that he鈥檇 bought it over thirty years ago from an instrument maker in South East London named Paddy Bush. This man turned out to be the brother of Kate Bush whose wonderful appearance at the Hammersmith Apollo last week has been so widely acclaimed. So there I was, two people and thirty years separating me from this astonishing singer. Not much to boast of but better than nothing, that鈥檚 what I say.

Being a literature man, I was always interested by Wuthering Heights, the hit single which brought Kate Bush so dramatically into public view. In Emily Bronte鈥檚 novel of that name, it鈥檚 the ghost of Catherine Earnshaw that knocks on the window of her one-time lover, a man called Heathcliff, begging to come in. She wants to be forgiven for letting him down in love and pleads to be allowed in. The song picks up on this theme 鈥 鈥淗eathcliff, it鈥檚 me Cathy come home. I鈥檓 so cold. Let me in-a-your window.鈥 As with so much good music, this song rises above the feelings of the singer and strikes a chord with the experience of all of us. We make ghastly mistakes and long for the opportunity to make up for them. With the title of Kate Bush鈥檚 Hammersmith concert in mind, we should do this Before the Dawn.

That鈥檚 exactly the advice Saint Paul gives: 鈥淏e angry if you like but don鈥檛 get carried away; don鈥檛 let the sun go down on your anger.鈥 Do this and I鈥檒l bet you鈥檒l get a good night鈥檚 sleep and you鈥檒l face the new day in a far better frame of mind.
