Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

With Father Brian D鈥橝rcy, a Catholic Passionist priest

The new school year is an emotional time for parents and pupils alike. For children starting school for the first time this is probably the most exciting event in their lives so far. For parents it is a cruel reminder of how quickly childhood passes.

Commuters like me face a different problem; back to school means more traffic on the roads, as well as a reminder to check the lights on my car now that both the mornings and evenings are closing in.

鈥淓ducation is an admirable thing, but it is well to remember from time to time that nothing worth knowing can be taught鈥 was Oscar Wilde鈥檚 cynical view of school days.

There鈥檚 a modicum of truth in what he says. In school we are taught lessons and then given tests to discover what we learned. In life it鈥檚 the other way round 鈥 it鈥檚 the tests we face in life which teach us the most valuable lessons.

At school I soaked up information but it was the University of Life which completed my education. It was experience which convinced me that the most valuable possessions are not material things we seek and hoard. It鈥檚 the gifts I can take with me when life is over that matter most 鈥 Love, generosity, faith, hope,聽fulfillment. 聽Incidentally the scriptures tell me that as well.

There is a difference between what looks good and being good.聽 Education needs both an enthusiastic teacher and a willing pupil. Teachers can teach only those who are teachable. The world is never made different by indifferent people.

It was a long time before I realised that my toughest lesson was to learn to accept myself as I am.聽 I鈥檓 a bundle of paradoxes. I believe and I doubt, I love and I hate, I feel bad about feeling good, I feel guilty about not feeling guilty, I鈥檓 good and God loves me no matter what.

In short a good education helps in this world and leads me to the next.
