Films and Books with Richard Ayoade

Mary Anne discusses film adaptations with author, director, actor, comedian and TV presenter Richard Ayoade.

Ever wondered how film directors adapt best-selling books for the silver screen?

Well, wonder no more, as Mary Anne's special guest this morning, answering that very question, is author, director, actor, comedian and TV presenter, Richard Ayoade.

Richard is probably best known for his parts in cult comedy TV programmes including The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace and The Mighty Boosh, but he has many, many strings to his bow.

After shunning a career in law, he has directed music videos for bands including Arctic Monkeys, Vampire Weekend and Yeah Yeah Yeahs. In 2010 he went on to direct his first ever film, Submarine, which was critically acclaimed.

His latest film, The Double, is a brilliant adaptation of Dostoevsky's novella of the same name, telling the story of one lowly office worker's struggle with his identity. It is out on DVD and Blu-ray now.

Richard's book, Ayoade on Ayaode, is a tongue-in-cheek reflection on his "cinematic legacy" and comes out via Faber & Faber this month.
