Living in the past amid the fading glories of her Sussex garden, Mrs St. Maugham rules a household no less eccentric than herself.

The arrival of a new companion brings order and a degree of sanity to this gently ridiculous entourage, but what secret lurks behind the careful composure of the mysterious Miss Madrigal?
