Scotland鈥檚 Harvest 2014
In a special one hour documentary, Dougie follows the highs and lows of the harvesting season. Filmed over three months in locations across Scotland the programme follows the fortunes of farmers as they battle against the elements and mechanical breakdowns to harvest crops at their prime.聽 Scotland鈥檚 Harvest 2014 follows three cereal farmers in the North, West and East of the country as well as featuring the challenges faced by some of Scotland鈥檚 fruit and vegetable farms.
George Elder
George and his Family farm one hundred acres at Brodie near Forres in Moray. George only grows Barley with the aim of selling it for the prime Whisky market. To achieve the best price the quality of his crop has to be perfect.
Duncan Macallister
Duncan and his Family farm 1400 acres at Glenbarr in Kintyre. Glenbarr is primarily a cattle and sheep enterprise but Duncan grows one hundred acres of Barley each year to feed his cattle through the winter and supplement their diet in the summer. The costs of importing animal feed to Kintyre are prohibitive so it is vital that Duncan gets a minimum one hundred and fifty tonnes of Barley from his harvest.
Hugh Broad
Hugh and his family farm fourteen hundred acres at Gifford in East Lothian. He grows a range of cereals on his own land and has contract farming arrangements with four neighbouring landowners.聽 Last year was the Broad family鈥檚 worst harvest and the business is under pressure. He needs a bumper crop to make up for the drop in grain prices across the globe.
