White Christmas - Mica on Barry
Mica Paris celebrates the music and enduring success of soul singer Barry White, talking to his colleagues and friends and counting down a top 20 of his greatest songs.
Mica Paris celebrates the music and enduring success of soul legend Barry White. In the first hour of this 2 hour tribute she talks to colleagues and friends of this accidental pop star and unlikely sex symbol. Originally an A&R man and producer, Barry White was initially a reluctant performer who had sung what he thought would be guide tracks only on some demos. However, after the release of I'm Gonna Love You Just A Little More Baby in 1973, he never looked back and stardom beckoned. And once he got the hang of it he was a more than convincing star as he considered his voice to be 'my supreme gift, the gilded chariot on which I have driven the music of my life'.
Mica also looks at the phenomenon of Barry White's strong connection with the UK and his British fans, a relationship that was formed when he enjoyed his first international success in this country. The second hour of Radio 2's celebration of all things Barry features a top 20 of his greatest sounds voted for by Radio 2 listeners including Never Gonna Give Ya Up, Can't Get Enough Of Your Love Babe, You're The First, The Last, My Everything and What Am I Gonna Do With You.
