Crucial Vinyl: Malcolm McLaren - Duck Rock

Don's choices cross time, space and genre, plus his Crucial Vinyl is Malcolm McLaren's groundbreaking 1983 debut album Duck Rock.

Each week Don selects a piece of Crucial Vinyl from his collection. He explains why the album means so much to him and picks three tracks from it.

This week it's Malcolm McLaren's ground-breaking debut Duck Rock, released in 1983.

Don says, "People forget Malcolm's part in bringing hip-hop to the UK with the tunes and the videos for Buffalo Gals and Double Dutch. Both featured on his excellent culture clash album Duck Rock, which was a mix of sounds from South Africa, the Caribbean and America. The album's artwork featured contributions from Dondi White (RIP) and Keith Haring (RIP), both then prominent figures in the New York graffiti scene. Duck Rock's release played a crucial part in the dissemination of hip-hop culture around the word."

You can also hear the late Malcolm McLaren telling the extraordinary story of the album's creation on ´óÏó´«Ã½ Radio 6 Music on Tuesday at 1 am.
