Crucial Vinyl: Brian Eno - Music for Films

Don's choices cross time, space and genre, plus his Crucial Vinyl is Brian Eno's 1978 ambient record Music for Films.

Every week Don selects a piece of 'Crucial Vinyl' from his album collection. He calls it his 'C.V.'. He explains how he came across it and why it means so much to him. He plays three favourite tracks. Over the past year he's chosen albums by artists ranging from Smokey Robinson to the Sex Pistols and Dr Alimantado to the Beach Boys.

This week he features Music for Films, the ambient 1978 release by Brian Eno.

Don says, "Eno described this album as "soundtracks to 'imaginary' films". Now, I'm not really sure how many film-makers actually took him up on this, but it's a great soundtrack for your imagination. Come to think of it, I did and still hear it being used quite a bit on television. This is probably due to the fact that, unlike most of his later ambient offerings, this album features pieces that run between a minute and four minutes long, really short by Eno's standards, and, although they are ambient, they are also very 'musical' at the same time. This is a great record for letting your mind wander 'where it will go'.".
