Emotions run high at the Beales' as Jane's world continues to crumble, and she resorts to drastic measures. A familiar face returns to the Square.
Jane’s unable to sleep, terrified what Carol may have told the police. Ian comforts her that Carol knows nothing just as there’s a scream from upstairs. Ian and Jane wake Cindy from a nightmare; she sobs the police are coming for them. Ian packs a worried Bobby back to bed while Jane quietens Cindy. Ian soothes that as long as they stay quiet nothing can happen, but Jane’s certain that Carol knows the truth.
Next morning, Ian assures a worried Cindy they would’ve heard from the police if Carol knew anything and orders her and Jane to carry on as normal. Jane makes for the door, determined to find out what Carol knows. Ian pursues and begs her not to fall apart now - they can’t raise any suspicions. Jane approaches the Butchers’, hesitates, then knocks on the door. She’s hugely relieved when Carol explains the police visit was about Cora - she’s been sighted at a homeless shelter near Bethnal Green. When Abi’s car won’t start, guilty Jane offers to drive. Ian learns Jane never showed up at the café and phones her, perplexed that she’s helping Carol.
At the homeless shelter, Cora’s not there but someone recognises her photo and reports she’s been drunk and acting aggressively. Carol’s grateful for Jane’s help. As they search, Abi suddenly spots Cora, dirty and dishevelled, but she flees and shouts at them to keep away, manically claiming she has no home and her family are dead. Jane tries to reason with her; Cora eventually recognises Abi and allows them to lead her away. Back in Walford, Cora demands a drink. Jane tries to convince her to wash and Cora questions why Jane’s helping. Liam rushes in to report Bobby was about to throw a brick through Max’s car window. Jane hurries home; she’s horrified to find Cindy and Bobby mid argument, Cindy lying on the floor where Lucy died. Cindy shrieks that Bobby attacked her. Jane protests he didn’t mean it, distraught when Cindy insinuates he deliberately hurt Lucy. As Cindy and Ian argue about Bobby, Jane heads upstairs. Bobby meekly apologises. Tearful, Jane tells Bobby she’s sorry and heads back to the Butchers’, resolving to tell the truth - she should have done it the night Lucy died. Ian begs her not to but Jane’s resolute.
At the Butchers’, Jane begins to explain about Bobby but is stunned into silence when Cora pipes up she knows Max killed Lucy; she saw he and Abi cleaning the Car Lot office. Shamefaced, Abi tearfully admits Max said he and Lucy had an argument – they needed to get rid of the blood. Ian grips Jane’s hand and she gives a silent nod - she’ll keep quiet.
Cindy wakes screaming from a nightmare, terrified that Carol knows the truth. Next morning, Cindy’s uneasy when Bobby asks if her nightmare was about Max and hopes he stays in prison forever. Ian assures a jittery Cindy they would’ve heard from the police if Carol knew anything and leaves her to look after Bobby while he tracks Jane down. Cindy’s unnerved when Bobby wishes Max would get the death penalty, and walks out. Dodging Ian, Liam whisks her off to the park. Cindy and Liam discuss Max; Cindy tries to stay positive that Max can’t be found guilty if he’s innocent.
Later, she’s horrified to find Bobby about to throw a brick through Max’s car windscreen and hauls him home. Bobby shouts that he hates Max; the pair argue, Bobby pushes Cindy and she falls backwards onto the spot Lucy died. As Jane rushes in, terror-stricken Cindy demands Bobby stay away from her. Bobby tries to apologise and Jane ushers him upstairs. Cindy thinks Bobby’s a monster who can’t control his anger and they need to get him help; Ian won’t hear of it and instead berates Cindy for leaving Bobby alone. When a wracked Jane exits, resolving to tell Carol the truth, Cindy waits anxiously at home. Liam arrives to check on her, reporting Ian and Jane are over at the Butchers’. Relieved it’s finally over, Cindy tells Liam that Bobby killed Lucy.
