Back in the seventies, the zoologist Dr Peter Evans came up with聽a revolutionary plan to monitor and study cetaceans from land, using volunteers.聽Before that, information about whales, dolphins and other mammals, was derived almost entirely from the examination of dead animals that had been stranded ashore or the target of whaling activities. There was some cynicism at the time that the scheme would work.聽 But it has worked - and very effectively!

In Science Cafe this week, Adam Walton talks to Peter about聽the Sea Watch Foundation聽at his home in Bull Bay, Anglesey. Later, he joins Peter and veteran wildlife spotter Ken Croft on a trip to Point Lynas, where they聽follow harbour porpoises. And hundreds of聽cetaceans were spotted around the Welsh coastline in one week聽alone recently, during the annual National Whale and Dolphin Watch. Kathy James, the sightings officer, tells Adam how people can get involved.聽聽
