St Aloysius鈥 is in the centre of Glasgow just up from Sauchiehall Street and close to the Art School. 听It鈥檚 a Jesuit Church, so you would not be surprised by its baroque fa莽ade and barrel vault, reminiscent of Jesuit Churches in Rome.听 Pope Francis, who is this weekend in Philadelphia attending the World Meeting of Families, would also recognise on the fa莽ade and high over my head here above the altar, the trademark Jesuit sunburst, which is also included in his own coat of arms.听 In its centre are the letters IHS, standing for Jesus Hominum Salvator, Jesus the human family鈥檚 Saviour, in whose name we are called to celebrate God鈥檚 presence in the Word and Sacrament.

Priest:听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听 Jesus said, where two or three gather together in my name, there I am in the midst of them. Conscious of his presence we ask him to reconcile us through his mercy as we sing the Kyrie Eleison.

FIRST READING

READER:听听听听听听 A reading from the book of Numbers

The Lord came down in the Cloud.听 He spoke with Moses, but took some of the spirit that was on him and put it on the seventy elders.听 When the spirit came on them they prophesied, but not again.

Two men had stayed back in the camp; one was called Eldad and the other Medad.听 The spirit came down on them; though they had not gone to the Tent, their names were enrolled among the rest.听 These began to prophesy in the camp.听 The young man ran to tell this to Moses, 鈥淟ook鈥, he said 鈥淓ldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.鈥澨 Then said Joshua the son of Nun, who had served Moses from his youth, 鈥淢y Lord Moses, stop them!鈥澨 Moses answered him, 鈥淎re you jealous on my account?听 If only the whole people of the Lord were prophets, and the Lord gave his Spirit to them all!鈥

FR JIM:听听 GOSPEL READING

John said to Jesus, 鈥淢aster, we saw a man who is not one of us casting out devils in your name; and because he was not one of us we tried to stop him.鈥澨 But Jesus said, 鈥淵ou must not stop him: no one who works a miracle in my name is likely to speak evil of me.听 Anyone who is not against us is for us.

鈥淚f anyone gives you a cup of water to drink just because you belong to Christ, then I tell you solemnly, he will most certainly not lose his reward.

鈥淏ut anyone who is an obstacle to bring down one of these little ones who have faith, would be better thrown into the sea with a great millstone round his neck.听 And if your hand should cause you to sin, cut it off; it is better for you to enter into life crippled, than to have two hands and go to hell, into the fire that cannot be put out.听

The Gospel of the Lord

All:听听听听 Praise to you, Lord Jesus Christ.

FR JIM:听听 SERMON

Early in the Gospel of Mark, there is a revealing moment about Jesus鈥 relationship with his family. They turn up when he is teaching, looking to drag him away because they thought he was crazy.听听听 And If I had talked to my mother the way Jesus talks to his, there would have been trouble. In fact nearly every time Jesus鈥 family appears, he looks to keep them at a distance.听 鈥榊our mother and your brothers are outside鈥, they said.听 And looking around at the crowd he is teaching, he says, 鈥渢hese are my mother and sisters and brothers鈥.听 It is not that family is bad, necessarily, but the idea of family in the Kingdom is something that bursts through boundaries.

Jesus is not condemning family, but trying to re-imagine it.听 There is a sense of family that goes beyond flesh and blood.听 The Gospel of Mark shows us how Jesus breaks through boundaries of blood, ethnicity and gender to claim something,听 and it is that the quality of loving relationship that we find in family at its best is too good to be confined to a small unit, the whole human family deserves and demands the intensity and freeing quality of love at its most committed.

In the reading from the book of Numbers, we see that even while the Spirit is being shared out beyond the figure of Moses, people want to ring-fence it.听 The seventy have been taken to the special and holy place of the tent of meeting to receive the Spirit.听 And they prophesied but only there.

听But Eldad and Medad remained in the complete mess of the Israelite camp and they prophesied and went on prophesying;听 surely this is not right.听听听 Moses is very free about this 鈥業f only all the Lord鈥檚 people were prophets and the Lord had given them all his Spirit鈥.听

We see easily enough how that interlocks with the Gospel.听 鈥楬e is not one of us, so we stopped him鈥, says John. 鈥楲et鈥檚 keep this tight鈥 he is saying.听听 鈥榃e have the power鈥.听 听Let鈥檚 loosen it up says Jesus. 听听Anyone who is not against us is for us.

At a time of crisis when he cannot cope, and his siblings, Aaron and Miriam, are against him and not for him, Moses asks God for help beyond his own and even his family resources, because the people are in great need; they are all over the place struggling to come to terms with their pilgrim existence in the wilderness and not liking it one bit.

Listen to this quote from Pope Francis:

I can clearly see that what the Church needs today is the ability to heal wounds and warm the hearts of faithful, it needs to be by their side. I see the Church as a field hospital after a battle. It鈥檚 pointless to ask a seriously injured patient whether his cholesterol or blood sugar levels are high! It鈥檚 his wounds that need to be healed. The rest we can talk about later. Now we must think about treating those wounds. And we need to start from the bottom.

This description of the Church and World by Pope Francis may help us to respond to the difficult sayings at the end of the Gospel. There are few people who think that they have to be taken literally, but we should understand that people have already wounded others and in the process themselves too, and the damage they have done may need a radical remedy, an organic remedy (to continue the metaphor of the body parts. ) 听But in the midst of all this mess, an image is conjured of someone bringing a cup of water to drink, and who by that simplest of the acts of merciful solidarity, finds themselves in this unruly world of the new family that is the whole of humanity waiting for healing and comfort.听 Can we re-imagine the human family through the giving and receiving of a glass of water?

THE APOSTLES鈥 CREED

Priest:听听听听听听听听听听 Let鈥檚 stand for the Apostles鈥 Creed:

All:听听听听 I believe in God, the Father almighty, Creator of heaven and earth,

And in Jesus Christ, his only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the Virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was buried; he descended into hell;

On the third day he rose again from the dead; he ascended into heaven, and is seated at the right hand of God the Father almighty; from there he will come to judge the living and the dead.听

I believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy catholic Church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and life everlasting.

Amen.

INTERCESSIONS

Priest:

We are very aware of Pope Francis鈥 visit to the Americas. It seems good to ask God to help and empower him in his prophetic word, and to bring ourselves into the heart of his concerns.

Reader:

Pope Francis cares deeply for the cry of the poor, we ask God to sharpen the hearing of all of humanity, that those fortunate enough to be more prosperous will help and share with the world鈥檚 poorest.

Lord in your mercy听听 Hear our prayer

Pope Francis says 鈥渨e are not God. The earth was here before us and it has been given into our care.鈥澨 Help us, Lord, to accept the responsibility of caring for God鈥檚 creation.

Lord in your mercy听听 Hear our prayer

We live in a situation today, says the Pope, where sin is manifest in all its destructive power in wars, the various forms of violence and abuse; help us Lord to be bringers of peace where there is none.

Lord in your mercy听 听Hear our prayer

We pray for the Synod on the Family in the Vatican next month.听 May the Church 鈥漝eepen her spiritual discernment and consider concrete solutions to the many difficult and significant challenges facing families in our time,"

All:听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听听 May the Lord accept the sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy Church.

Priest:听听听听听听听听听听 Introduction to the Eucharistic Prayer

During the Offertory Motet, the gifts of bread and wine have been brought forward in procession.听 Bread and wine immediately turn our minds to remembering the Last Supper of Jesus with his disciples. That farewell meal anticipated the death and resurrection of Jesus. All those elements are powerfully present now as we remember those events, reflect on them in prayer, and allow the transformation of the bread and wine into the Body and Blood of Christ to transform us too and challenge us to transfigure the world we live in.听 So let us pray.

Priest:听听听听听听听听听听 Grant us O merciful God that this offering may find acceptance with you and that through it the wellspring of all blessing may be laid open before us.听 We pray this in the Spirit through Christ our Lord,

Priest:听听听听听听听听听听 It is truly right and just to praise you Lord, holy Father, almighty and eternal God. Make holy, therefore, these gifts, we pray, by sending down your Spirit upon them like the dewfall, so that they may become for us the Body + and Blood of our Lord, Jesus Christ.

At the time he was betrayed and entered willingly into his Passion, he took bread and, giving thanks, broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:

Humbly we pray that, partaking of the Body and Blood of Christ, we may be gathered into one by the Holy Spirit.

Remember, Lord, your Church, spread throughout the world, and bring her to the fullness of charity, together with N. our Pope and N. our Bishop and all the clergy.

Remember also our brothers and sisters who have fallen asleep in the hope of the resurrection and all who have died in your mercy: welcome them into the light of your face.
