Welsh or English? Lucy Owen's Big School Dilemma
Documentary in which Lucy Owen meets families, teachers and experts to help decide whether she should send her son to a Welsh-medium or English-medium secondary school.
As part of a new season, 大象传媒 Wales is looking at how Wales works - starting with education. Lucy Owen faces a huge decision over her son's future. Should she send him to Welsh-medium or English-medium secondary school?
It's a dilemma familiar to parents across Wales, but it's dividing Lucy and Welsh-speaking husband Rhodri like never before. Neither anticipated how passionate they'd feel about the choice they need to make. Their son Gabriel is thriving at Welsh-medium primary and dad's keen for him to carry on learning in Welsh. But Lucy, who's really struggled to learn the language over the years, fears that sending her son to a Welsh-medium secondary will mean she won't be able to support him or be involved in his education.
In this remarkably honest and personal journey, Lucy meets families, teachers and experts she hopes can help her find a way forward. She encounters parents with strong views on both sides of the argument and travels to Queen's College, Cambridge, to seek the wisdom of Welsh rugby international Jamie Roberts. In a family divided, will Lucy be able to reach a final decision that's right for them all?
