So the AbFab movie has over 60 cameos 鈥� which reminds me of my own sitcom cameo. Helping write comedy show 鈥楳iranda鈥�, I begged them, over three years, for a walk-on part. Eventually, when I held the latest script draft hostage till they gave me a role, they gave me a role. 鈥楴on-Speaking Customer鈥� may sound like a minor part 鈥� and it was. BUT I was recently told, that over the entire three-and-a-bit series of our sitcom set in Miranda鈥檚 shop, I was the ONLY customer to ever actually buy anything. Across twenty episodes, I singlehandedly kept her business afloat with my one purchase of鈥� whatever it was I purchased.

In the real world though, we don鈥檛 see ourselves as bit-parts, but as stars of our own life stories. It鈥檚 human nature鈥� Yet we鈥檙e not isolated individuals. We live in relationship to each other: comedians need laughers, singers are helped by an audience, cooks benefit from someone to cook for, boxers need鈥� someone to box. Not me thanks, Mr Joshua sir.

I know I see myself as title role in my own life story, but I鈥檓 also a bit-part in other people鈥檚. Perhaps it鈥檚 when we cameo in OTHER PEOPLE鈥橲 stories, that the magic happens鈥� So I aspire to the saints who鈥檝e walked among us: the Mother Teresas, Mandelas, our current Pope Francis, making headlines from interactions with the oppressed and needy, instead of grand speeches.

We await life-changing, world-fixing statements from our leaders, but while blueprints are being drawn up, I鈥檒l remember it鈥檚 up to us to get to work. While the hub of Jesus鈥� teaching was that Sermon on the Mount, blessing meek and turning cheek, it was actually on the way to the big crowds, that the miracles happened. As he travelled, he鈥檇 touch centurions and lepers, worlds apart from the xenophobic encounters on public transport we鈥檝e heard of in the past week.

On my commute, may I look out for times I can make a difference 鈥� although when I gave up my seat yesterday for a pregnant woman who it turns out wasn鈥檛 pregnant, or a woman, well, it was awkward. But bring on positive cameos in other people鈥檚 stories! We might think we鈥檙e just a passing transaction鈥� but who knows, we might be the only paying customer for the past three series.
