Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Canon Ann Easter, Chaplain to the Queen:

It’s the 4th of July, and so of course it’s American Independence Day! The day when our American cousins commemorate the adoption of the declaration of independence on July 4th, 1776 when the thirteen colonies decided to regard themselves  as a new nation and no longer part of the British Empire. It’s a great celebration; lots of people have a day off and there are parades and carnivals, picnics and speeches, concerts and firework displays.

And that reminded me of my own explosive teenage years and my yearning for independence.

I must say that my parents were kind and good – but I wanted to do things my way. To be independent and to have no obligations. To be able to come and go as I pleased, to leave the dishes in the sink if I had something more interesting to do, not to have to go to boring old church and to stay out as late as I liked. And I wanted to throw away what was left of an old bar of soap rather than attempt to weld it on to the new bar, thereby making two bars of soap soggy and unusable - but my mother insisted on it.

To my shame, I rebelled big time, yelled and slammed doors, turned down a place at Uni and eventually went off to train to be a nurse. Suddenly I could do as I pleased. I stayed out all night and my room was a tip. I was a bit lonely but hey! I was independent.

And that was ok, for a little while. But, as time went on and especially when I was expecting my first baby, I realised that I found my independence a bit hollow. Quite quickly, I rediscovered my Christian faith and I recognised my need for God and my need for other people; humans are social beings and we are so much more productive together.

I believe that sometimes God gives us independence so that, having tasted it, we can relinquish it in happy cooperation with each other and with God.

But I still throw away the last bit of soap!
