Pause for Thought
From Father Christopher Jamison, Benedictine Monk:
听
There鈥檚 a lot of emotion in the air at the moment, much more than we British are used to. There鈥檚 despair over the England football team鈥檚 performance in Euro 2016, elation at the Welsh team getting into the Semi-Final. And then there's the increasing use of the word awesome to describe trivial events. A cappuccino please. "Awesome", replies the barista. Why has our British capacity for understatement seemed to have disappeared in favour of emotional overload?
Here鈥檚 an imaginary story. You鈥檙e out shopping in your local supermarket and as you walk onto the street, a good friend is walking into the store but the friend doesn鈥檛 acknowledge you. You think to yourself: my friend just ignored me, which makes me very angry so I won鈥檛 go round to see them tomorrow as planned. But let鈥檚 rerun that same scenario. You鈥檙e out shopping in your local supermarket and as you walk onto the street, a good friend is walking into the store but the friend doesn鈥檛 acknowledge you. This time you think to yourself: my friend must be very worried about something, which makes me very concerned for them so I must call round later today to see how they are. Same set of actions, but in the second scenario I think about the situation differently; I choose to keep thinking positively about my friend and the result is that instead of anger I feel compassion. My thoughts changed my feelings.
Increasingly, I believe people tend to see things as either triumph or disaster but daily life is best lived with thoughts that enable me to maintain a sober realism. Triumphalism and despair never really helped anybody. I鈥檇 rather keep the word awesome where it began: to acclaim God, the one who is beyond triumph and despair, who I believe always treats us with compassion so great that he always loves us as we are. Now that really is awesome.
