Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Rabbi Dr Harvey Belovski, rabbi of Golders Green Synagogue and CEO of University Jewish Chaplaincy:

Ìý

I’m often asked how my wife and I met.Ìý I joke that we were the last two left eating at a university event.Ìý We got talking and the rest is history.

ÌýBut it’s not a joke – we really did meet at the Oxford University Jewish Society over a meal.Ìý And 26 years and seven children later, we’re still at the table together.

ÌýEnjoying food together enables people to chat and explore common experiences. But not everyone appreciates it - you may have heard of the man who said to a friend: ‘My wife seems to have developed an aversion to Chinese restaurants. ÌýI just don’t understand it – after all, we met in a Chinese restaurant’.

ÌýIn my interfaith work, sharing meals has been one of the most valuable ways of developing new, meaningful relationships with people from other faiths.Ìý And in my work with University Jewish Chaplaincy, I encourage my chaplains on campuses around the country to reach out to students over a delicious meal to connect them to Jewish life and each other.

ÌýApparently, around 2/3 of UK families don’t eat together on a regular basis and one in seven don’t have a dining room table.Ìý People eat on their own on the hop, while watching TV or in front of the computer.

ÌýWe try to eat together as a family as often as possible; even if the meal is brief, we manage it most days.Ìý As well as catching up on family news and worries, it is known that eating together reduces the chances that teenagers will engage in high-risk, negative behaviour.

ÌýJudaism is keen on shared meals.Ìý The weekly Shabbat – Sabbath – centres on relaxed family meals with special food and a unique atmosphere.Ìý At our home, we have guests most weeks – often community members, sometimes leaders of other faiths, all friends.Ìý We eat, talk about spiritual ideas or current affairs and sing Shabbat songs or wordless melodies.Ìý There are no distractions – phones are banned – and time often passes quickly.Ìý It’s no exaggeration to say that the Shabbat meal is the central pillar of our family’s week.

ÌýIt’s hard to find the time to share a meal with family or new friends, but the benefits can be amazing.Ìý You may even meet the love of your life.
