Pause for Thought
From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:
听
On Saturday morning in my synagogue, we鈥檒l be reading the unusual story of Balaam and his donkey. Balaam is travelling to curse the Israelites, at his master Balak鈥檚 command. But God, who wasn鈥檛 too keen on this, put an angel in the way. Only the donkey could see the angel. The first time, the angel appeared with a drawn sword, so the donkey swerved out of the way. Balaam hit her. The second time, the angel appeared in a narrow passageway between two vineyard walls, so she swerved, and crushed Balaam鈥檚 foot. Balaam hit her again. The third time, the angel chose such a narrow place that the animal鈥檚 only option was to lie down; and Balaam hit her again.
That鈥檚 when the donkey speaks "What have I done to you to make you beat me these three times?鈥澨
And Balaam, idiotically, replied: "How dare you mock me! If I had a sword, I鈥檇 kill you right here and now. 鈥淎nd it鈥檚 only then that God opens Balaam鈥檚 eyes. He sees the angel, talks with him, and realises his donkey is far superior to him in prophecy.
But nowhere in this whole story is it suggested that there鈥檚 anything unusual about a talking donkey. Indeed, it seems as if it鈥檚 quite normal! So we鈥檙e left asking whether this is just a colourful way of making a point, and we鈥檙e not meant to take it seriously, or whether there was a strong belief in the ability of animals to speak, and the fact they didn鈥檛 most of the time was because they had nothing to say. I think there鈥檚 a third explanation. This is a deliberately fantastical story. Whoever heard of a talking donkey? And so the moral is not about talking animals, but about listening, and watching, carefully. You may feel like carrying on regardless down a chosen path, but look around and listen to your inner voice. Don鈥檛 ignore the giveaway signs of upcoming problems. nor the fact that others are blocking your way. I believe there are talking donkeys in our lives to remind us to think twice about our actions, and be reasonable when
things go wrong. The talking donkey is our friend, and there to protect us.
