Pause for Thought
From Rev’d Richard Coles, cleric and broadcaster:
Ìý
One of the more surprising things I’ve done lately is go to church.
Ìý
Hardly going the extra mile, I know for a Vicar, but I’m on sabbatical at the moment, off parish duties till September, so on Sundays I’m going to other people’s churches instead of my own, and sitting at the back instead of standing at the front.
Ìý
And what a revelation that’s been. Some clergy go on too long, others sound like they’re late for a train, some wave their arms about, others look like they’ve got rigor mortis, some read the gospel like Nena Nanar doing the entertainment news, others look like they’re reading the casualty lists after a battle.
Ìý
And of course, after a while you stop thinking ‘what do they look like’ and start thinking ‘what do I look like’.
Ìý
There are moments, aren’t there, when we see ourselves as others see us, a sudden awareness of how we actually look to the world: it happens on TV talent shows, when, paraded in front of an audience and judges, someone for the first time realises how good they are – or how bad.
Ìý
I can relate to that, because there’s nothing more unnerving for a Vicar than to see in the congregation another Vicar. You thought Simon Cowell was merciless? You don’t know what merciless is until you accidentally split your epiclesis in front of a holidaying Archdeacon.
Ìý
I suppose all professions are like that; but there’s another side to it. When clergy fall, make a proper mess of things, get into serious trouble, those merciless critics can suddenly become unexpectedly generous and kind and selfless. Combatants become comrades, and normal hostilities are suspended – for a while. It’s not only in the clerical profession that happens.
