Chris' Pause for Thought: Sarah Joseph

Chris' Pause for Thought: Sarah Joseph
From Sarah Joseph, Editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine:

Tens of thousands of students in England and Wales will be opening their GCSE results this morning.

Firstly, to all those who sat exams-well done. Whatever results you got, going through the process was a test of endurance! Be proud!

But for sure, there will be a mixture of emotions, from elation to deep distress.

I still remember my results day. There was none of the media coverage of raising and falling standards, no social media sharing of jumping for joy. Indeed, it was a rather dull affair, and I just don't remember any of the pressure that today's children face.

There wasn't the feeling that any one set of results was the determiner of one's entire life. The teachers didn't brow beat us into achieving. This was before the age of League Tables, and I don't think they were under the pressure that today's teachers face.

Are we in a better place now? Are our children better employees? Are they any happier?

We may get year on year grade increases; but the Confederation of British Industry warned that school leavers are under-equipped for life.听

There are also marked increases in mental health issues. Indeed charities that focus on mental health needs describe the situation amongst teenagers as reaching epidemic proportions.

There is no doubt that we live in an age where exam results matter. But they can't be the ONLY things that matter.

In my experience, confidence and a "can do" attitude can get someone a long, long way in life.

Resilience when things go wrong is absolutely essential, because in life things generally don't go right at the first attempt. Our children need to learn to "try, try, and try again".

And strange as this may sound, I think our children need to be taught about relationships, about friendships, and engaging with fellow humans, because exams may be taken as individuals, but we live and work with others collaboratively.

As an employer, I would take enthusiasm, dedication, and initiative over a clutch of A grades any day of the week.

And as a person of faith, I believe God is interested in the content of our hearts not our certificates.

Ultimately, I believe society doesn't need exam factories, rather we have to grow human beings capable of living contentedly with others, and within our own selves; capable of being kind to themselves, and compassionate towards
