Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Revered Kate Bottley, Vicar of the churches of Blyth, Scrooby and Ranskill:

I have a confession to make, Chris, in coming here today to have more fun than I have since, well this time last year, I have abandoned my husband when he needed me most. We are in the middle of a house move and up to our ears in boxes. We have too much stuff and it won’t all fit into our new house and because I can’t do car boots, being otherwise engaged on a Sunday morning, we came up with a plan, to take our unwanted, but perfectly functional bits and bobs and give them away. Last week we put a sign up on the village green ‘FREE STUFF, help yourself’ a leather sofa, our kids outgrown bikes, a tent and more. Within minutes the first car pulled up and a mum and her daughter got out, the little girl was thrilled with her new, scooter, the tent went next to a young couple in a beat up corsa. And then suddenly and unexpectedly I got a bit weepy, not because I’d changed my mind about the tent, but because I was moved by the looks of surprise and happiness of complete strangers. I thought this was just about getting rid of the stuff we didn’t need and giving it to someone who did, but actually it wasn’t just the people taking away my sofa that received an unexpected gift on the village green that morning. I got a gift too. It made me feel brilliant. Of course we shouldn’t give because of what we get in return, but the buzz of blessing others is a wonderful by-product of generosity.

It has a biblical mandate too, Jesus was generous in his time and gifts and said ‘What you do for the least of these you do for me’, to give, to put love into action is a divine act itself.Ìý The people here today who have given to others they will never meet, can take a little joy for themselves and if you give, even only a bit to Children in Need I guarantee the way that it will make you feel will make you want to give again. Be warned generosity is addictive. And after all a look of love is all well and good but an act of love is better. So have a lovely, lovely day, you lovely, lovely people, drive carefully and as you have blessed others may you too be blessed.
