Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

Ruth Scott Anglican Priest and Quaker:

Like many people I鈥檝e felt disturbed by the images coming from the Italian earthquake zone. The shock of standing on what you think is solid ground only to find it suddenly shaking and falling away, bringing your world crashing down around you, is frightening to imagine. Thankfully for most of us in the UK it鈥檚 a trauma we haven鈥檛 had to face - at least not in the form of a natural disaster. I suspect many more of us know the experience of other things we thought were solid and certain in our lives, falling apart without warning, leaving us feeling lost and insecure: betrayal by people we trusted, unexpected bereavement, work not working out, and all kinds of other events that shake our sense of who we are, and turn our emotional landscape upside down. At present I鈥檓 in the process of moving house after 27 years in our much loved family home. So many goodbyes! The shifting sands of time remind me we are never truly on solid ground. Life moves on. In the gospels Jesus speaks of having nowhere to lay his head, and I think that鈥檚 true for all of us in terms of nothing in life being permanent. Most change happens without much problem but every so often, the shift in our circumstances is so significant, it rocks our sense of stability, leaving us feeling all at sea. I used to see faith as a rock to cling to in times of trouble, but these days it鈥檚 a raft helping me to navigate the never-still currents of life. As a result, I sit more lightly to change, going with the flow when situations move beyond my control, riding the tides and facing their challenges as best I can, trusting the wind of the Spirit to take me forward. Most importantly, I鈥檝e discovered the importance of letting go of what holds me back from going forward. The wisdom of this is captured well in the saying, 鈥淭o travel far, carry less.鈥
