聽THE LITURGY OF THE WORDSitTHE FIRST READING: 聽 Acts 10:34-43
Then Peter began to speak to them: 鈥業 truly understand that God shows no partiality, but in every nation anyone who fears him and does what is right is acceptable to him. You know the message he sent to the people of Israel, preaching peace by Jesus Christ鈥攈e is Lord of all. That message spread throughout Judea, beginning in Galilee after the baptism that John announced: how God anointed Jesus of Nazareth with the Holy Spirit and with power; how he went about doing good and healing all who were oppressed by the devil, for God was with him. We are witnesses to all that he did both in Judea and in Jerusalem. They put him to death by hanging him on a tree; but God raised him on the third day and allowed him to appear, not to all the people but to us who were chosen by God as witnesses, and who ate and drank with him after he rose from the dead. He commanded us to preach to the people and to testify that he is the one ordained by God as judge of the living and the dead. All the prophets testify about him that everyone who believes in him receives forgiveness of sins through his name.鈥

THE GOSPEL READING: 聽 John 20. 1-18聽聽DeaconThe Lord be with youand also with you.聽Deacon聽Hear the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ according to John. All sing 聽Glory to you, O Lord!聽聽聽Early on the first day of the week, while it was still dark, Mary Magdalene came to the tomb and saw that the stone had been removed from the tomb. So she ran and went to Simon Peter and the other disciple, the one whom Jesus loved, and said to them, 鈥楾hey have taken the Lord out of the tomb, and we do not know where they have laid him.鈥 Then Peter and the other disciple set out and went towards the tomb. The two were running together, but the other disciple outran Peter and reached the tomb first. He bent down to look in and saw the linen wrappings lying there, but he did not go in. Then Simon Peter came, following him, and went into the tomb. He saw the linen wrappings lying there, and the cloth that had been on Jesus鈥 head, not lying with the linen wrappings but rolled up in a place by itself. Then the other disciple, who reached the tomb first, also went in, and he saw and believed; for as yet they did not understand the scripture, that he must rise from the dead. Then the disciples returned to their homes.聽But Mary stood weeping outside the tomb. As she wept, she bent over to look into the tomb; and she saw two angels in white, sitting where the body of Jesus had been lying, one at the head and the other at the feet. They said to her, 鈥榃oman, why are you weeping?鈥 She said to them, 鈥楾hey have taken away my Lord, and I do not know where they have laid him.鈥 When she had said this, she turned round and saw Jesus standing there, but she did not know that it was Jesus. Jesus said to her, 鈥榃oman, why are you weeping? For whom are you looking?鈥 Supposing him to be the gardener, she said to him, 鈥楽ir, if you have carried him away, tell me where you have laid him, and I will take him away.鈥 Jesus said to her, 鈥楳ary!鈥 She turned and said to him in Hebrew, 鈥楻abbouni!鈥 (which means Teacher). Jesus said to her, 鈥楧o not hold on to me, because I have not yet ascended to the Father. But go to my brothers and say to them,聽鈥淚 am ascending to my Father and your Father, to my God and your God.鈥 鈥 Mary Magdalene went and announced to the disciples, 鈥業 have seen the Lord鈥; and she told them that he had said these things to her.聽DeaconThis is the Gospel of the Lord. All sing 聽Praise to you, O Christ! 聽聽Sit
THE SERMON 聽 聽聽The Right Reverend Graham James, Bishop of Norwich
We don鈥檛 always know why we weep. 聽Sometimes tears come unbidden. 聽As I get older I seem to cry more easily. 聽The tragedies of our world seem less bearable. 聽Experience does not always harden hearts. 聽It can make them more tender. 聽
Mary Magdalene is asked twice why she is weeping on the first Easter Day. 聽The reason seems obvious. 聽She had come to the tomb where Jesus had been hastily buried to anoint his body. 聽She wanted to do something for someone who had done so much for her. 聽 In graveyards tears are often shed. 聽And yet two angels ask her 鈥淲oman, why are you weeping?鈥 聽It鈥檚 not the most pastorally sensitive question. 聽Almost any training course would rule out the 鈥榳hy鈥 question. 聽It鈥檚 hard to explain tears when you鈥檙e crying. 聽
聽Recently I was with a family where a much loved husband and father was in the final days of his life. 聽I prayed with him and anointed him. 聽 Around his bed there was a lot of laughter as well as tears. 聽They were tears both of love and anticipated grief. 聽Love and grief are often found in each others鈥 company. 聽
When we shed tears we don鈥檛 always like others to see us crying. 聽We say sorry for losing control. 聽It鈥檚 strange that we look upon tears as a sign of weakness rather than an indication of a tender heart. 聽Emotional control is not always a good thing.
Mary Magdalene did have a tender heart. 聽Jesus had turned round her life. 聽 But she doesn鈥檛 seem to have been the sort of person who thought much of herself. 聽A poor self-image, we might say these days. 聽Those who put Jesus to death, by contrast, were not likely to have been racked by much self-doubt. 聽Jesus was the man who healed on the Sabbath, who disrupted trade in the Temple, who had said the morally righteous were hypocrites and spent his time with prostitutes and sinners. 聽Those who would like to turn Christianity into a set of rigid moral prohibitions 鈥 and there are plenty of them 鈥 do have Jesus with whom to contend. 聽On Easter Day the scandal of the gospel is evident. 聽Christ鈥檚 new life is for us all. 聽 He invites everyone, however unworthy, to have faith in him. 聽The glory of God鈥檚 unconquerable love for us, undeserving as we are, is beyond our capacity to explain. 聽The only real response is tears 鈥 both of joy and sorrow for our sins.
聽What Mary learned on that first Easter Day is that God is on the side of life and love. 聽Suffering and death do not have the last word. 聽You鈥檇 think this would be a popular message. 聽But God鈥檚 Easter surprise is not quite what we expect. 聽It is the crucified Lord who is raised from the dead. 聽Even on Easter Day we cannot forget Good Friday. 聽
Jesus did not seek suffering. 聽He prayed he might be spared the pain and anguish he saw coming on the night of his arrest. 聽But the Easter story makes no sense at all if suffering and pain is purposeless or cannot be redeemed. 聽We generally seek wisdom from those who have known suffering and come through it. 聽They are often deeper, stronger people as a consequence. 聽That鈥檚 the mystery. 聽The risen Christ still bore the mark of his wounds. 聽Thomas the doubter was convinced above all by that disfigured flesh. 聽
In her novel The Other Side of You Salley Vickers has a scene in which two psychiatrists are at a conference. 聽 Gus is now senior in years and experience. 聽 He鈥檚 been a mentor to a younger friend. 聽Their conference in London is about drug treatments. 聽Neither of them believe drugs are an adequate answer to anxiety and depression. 聽They go for a walk and cross the road towards Westminster Abbey. 聽鈥淭he question鈥 says Gus, 鈥渋s not how to cure or be cured but how to live. 聽See there,鈥 he says, stabbing his finger in the direction of the great Abbey Church 鈥渢hat鈥檚 what places like that should be for. 聽To help us live. 聽 There鈥檚 no cure for being alive鈥︹
聽We come to worship on Easter Day to help us live. 聽We come with our regrets, our wounds, our lack of faith in ourselves, our fears and hopes. 聽We come with tears of joy and sorrow and the confusions of our lives. 聽 We bring them where bread is broken and wine poured out. 聽We come to this altar where Christ offers himself to us. 聽We come not demanding any explanation from God, but offering worship and adoration too deep for words. 聽We come not to be patched together but to be made new. 聽 Because of Easter, life will never be the same again. 聽Christ is risen. 聽He is risen indeed! 聽Alleluia!
