Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From Sarah Joseph, editor of a Muslim lifestyle magazine.

There鈥檚 a story of a professor. He gives his class a test. The exam papers are blank, except for a single black dot. The students are confused, but the professor is adamant the test should continue. 鈥淲rite about what you see鈥, he tells them. When the test was finished, the professor read through the students鈥 answers. Without exception, each and every one of them had written about the black dot鈥攊ts size, its placement on the page, its potential meaning.

Eventually, the professor explained his motives for the test鈥攚e鈥檙e all given a blank sheet of paper to enjoy and make our own, yet we tend to focus on the dark spots鈥攖he negatives that every human life is faced with.

When we are faced with challenges, it is hard for them not to become the focus of our lives, whether they be our own problems, or the problems of loved ones. However, the entirety of our lives is not made up of problems, there are always blessings.听

For me, I can focus on the fact that my daughter is sick, or I can focus on the fact that she exerts enormous courage and fights hard every day to get well.

I can focus on the fact that I lose three to ten days every month with migraines, or be grateful for the 20 to 27 days that I have every month to strive to do good.

I can focus on the hate I see out in the world where so many seem to want to create a 鈥渢hem and us鈥 narrative, or I can admire and support the enormous amount of work people do, upholding each other鈥檚 common humanity.

I鈥檓 an optimist, but this positive attitude does not stop me trying to find solutions for the problems, it just means the problems don鈥檛 own me, they don鈥檛 define who I am.
There鈥檚 a chapter of the Qur鈥檃n entitled The Merciful, and it asks the same question again and again: 鈥渨hich of the blessings of your Lord will you deny?鈥 So when I feel particularly low, I move from inwards to out鈥攔eflecting on my beating heart, my five senses, my family, my access to shelter and food.

We all have 鈥渂lack dots of difficulties鈥 within our lives, but they exist on the great blank canvases of our existence, which provide space for us to write our blessings.
