Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought
From Leslie Griffiths, Methodist Minister:

Radio Two is focusing on the subject of loneliness this week and I suspect many of us are going to find it helpful to hear the situations they are going through discussed on air.  I’m sure we’ll become aware of fifty shades of loneliness, and discover just how many people suffer from this in any one of a number of ways.

It’s the loneliness of the long distance runner that frequently comes to my mind. This is a state that affects someone doing what he chooses to do, what he loves doing, what he spends hours and hours, weeks and months training for. And then there’s the run itself. So much of what matters most to athletes of this kind happens inside their own head. They believe no one can help; it’s all down to them. They’re surrounded by people, well-meaning people, but the battles and the targets and the effort have all to be all theirs.

Not many of us are long-distance runners but it’s not difficult to imagine getting caught in that same dynamic. A mother who takes time, sometimes years, out of work to raise her kids; a student embarked on research for a Ph.D.; someone setting up their own business or bringing a dream project to birth– they’re all doing what they’ve chosen willingly to do. And yet they frequently find themselves moving along a road less travelled. The Christian scripture tells us at one point that Jesus set his face like a flint towards Jerusalem. He knew this was something he must do even though his friends warned him against it. They simply couldn’t understand his decision; his enemies weighed up their moment to strike. He ended up in a very bad place. I suspect that his was a lonely road too.

Of course there are more severe and painful kinds of loneliness than this. People who’ve lost a loved one or suffered a breakdown of a relationship can speak of far deeper suffering. But every type of loneliness needs the understanding and solidarity of friends. And it’s friendship that’s the best possible antidote to the poison of loneliness in all its forms.
