Pause for Thought

Pause for Thought

From Julia Neuberger, Senior Rabbi at the west London Synagogue:

听I had a terrific time at our children鈥檚 service last weekend. The Torah reading was the story of Balaam, the Moabite, and his talking donkey. Imagine a group of six year olds pretending to be donkeys, making donkey noises.

听It鈥檚 a great story. Balaam was sent by the king of Moab to curse the Israelites. Instead, he ended up blessing them. But not before his donkey caused trouble, stopping on the journey because he could see an angel blocking the way. Finally, when Balaam鈥檚 frustration reached boiling point, he hit the donkey, who replied by opening his mouth and speaking, arguing he鈥檇 been a faithful donkey all these years, and what did Balaam think he was doing hitting him.

Balaam ends up saying 鈥淗ow goodly are your tents, O Jacob, your dwelling places, O Israel鈥, as part of a blessing rather than a curse. And those words now begin all of our services, words uttered first by someone who wasn鈥檛 an Israelite, wasn鈥檛 Jewish, who had come to curse and ended up praising.听

Many years ago, my father bought me an 18th century primitive painting of Balaam and his ass, AND the angel. It鈥檚 a really really bad painting. The painter couldn鈥檛 draw. But it鈥檚 fascinating that that story became so well known, and such a frequent subject for works of art. And the best thing about it is the donkey talking, and reproaching his newly violent owner. That turn of events comes as a shock. It鈥檚 a message that this is serious business, and Balaam is in real trouble with his donkey.听

But, most of all, to our modern day ears, it鈥檚 an animal objecting to ill-treatment, in a language the owner could understand. I wish more animals could do that, but, until they can, I believe that we need to keep the story of Balaam鈥檚 donkey in our minds, and use it to make it clear that animals do understand, do know, do feel- even if, as so-called dumb animals, they can鈥檛 speak.
