Nick Luscombe with Golden Records
Marking the 40th anniversary of the Voyager Golden Record, a sonic time capsule sent into space by Nasa to transmit earthly music, sounds and languages to extraterrestrials.
Marking the 40th anniversary of the Voyager Golden Record, a sonic gift sent into space by NASA to transmit earthly music, sounds and languages to extraterrestrials. A committee chaired by Carl Sagan selected the contents of this "message in a bottle cast into the cosmic ocean", including bits of Bach, blues music, and Chuck Berry on the gold-plated copper disc.
Tonight the task is Nick Luscombe's. He will be speculating on what futuristic sounds we would send out into the universe were we to do it again now, as well as playing the best bits from the original Golden Record, including traditional music from Benin, Peru, and Australia, mariachi from Lorenzo Barcelata, and Hindustani classical music from Kesarbai Kerkar.
To help discuss and dissect the Golden Record, Nick welcomes Black Quantum Futurism to Late Junction. Made up of experimental musician Moor Mother and author/attorney Rasheedah Phillips, they are an afro-futurist force in music, film, and literature, with a special interest in time capsules and temporality.
Humanity's farthest and longest-lived spacecraft, Voyager 1 and 2 achieve 40 years of exploration this August and September. Though they have left the planets far behind and will not come close to another star for 40,000 years, they continue to communicate with NASA daily.
Produced by Jack Howson for Reduced Listening.
