For the first time in years, I couch-potatoed the New Year. Instead of being out and about, I sat in front of the telly and watched the skies in Sydney, Hong Kong and Dubai, in Paris, Berlin and Madrid, and finally, triumphantly, in London, explode with bursts of colour as the countdown brought in a new year of grace. Even Big Ben got in on the act, his benign face and stately bong adding greatly to the sense of occasion.

聽If my spirits were raised by the spectacular things that were happening in the heavens, they were dashed by the news of what was happening on our streets. Four young men were stabbed to death as the old year faded away. 80 knife deaths in London in 2017 鈥� a third more than in the previous year. All that sadness and grief as families mourn the loss of loved ones 鈥� all taken so senselessly and with such brutal suddenness. No amount of fireworks will bring them back or compensate for their loss.

聽These examples of human wickedness are stark reminders that we鈥檙e living in dark times. As we call them to mind, it takes quite an effort to remember that it鈥檚 still Christmas time. With so much sadness and sorrow and, yes, wickedness to think about, just how do we engage with the fundamental message of this season, a message that brought a choir of angels to add not fireworks but glorious harmony to the night-time sky as they promised an event that would glorify God and offer peace to the world?

聽However paradoxical it sounds, it may be that the long-ago birth of a defenceless baby in unpropitious circumstances might just offer more to the peace and well-being of the world than deals done by those who hold the levers of power. He came to fill the hungry with good things, to exalt people of low degree and to scatter the proud in the imagination of their hearts. If all that could come to pass it would surely be worth another fireworks bonanza. And, this time, I鈥檇 be amongst the first to get up and go out to enjoy the spectacle.
