Love Equality campaigners meet with DUP

"Unfortunately the DUP's position remains the same" - John O'Doherty from Rainbow Project on Love Equality campaigners meeting with DUP yesterday.

Love Equality campaigners met for the first time with the DUP yesterday, regarding gay marriage. It led to speculation that the meeting hinted towards a possible change in stance from the party, who have long been against a change, in the definition of marriage. Equal marriage is one of the key stumbling blocks in the Stormont talks. Stephen spoke to John O'Doherty from the Rainbow Project.

Also on the programme, the naming of a 拢30 million leisure centre in Newtownards is on hold. Unionists want to name it after Blair Mayne - a soldier praised for his role in World War Two. Mayne also represented Ireland in rugby. But the SDLP oppose the naming - saying it will alienate nationalists. The Alliance Party have said leisure centres should be neutral spaces. So is this a genuine attempt to honour a sporting and war hero or an attempt to mark out territory? This is a story in the Belfast Telegraph today. Stephen got the views of NI Labour Party member Phil Kelly and Green Party councillor John Barry.

And, new figures obtained by Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful show that Council spending on cleaning streets, roads and open spaces is now costing more than 拢45 million, an increase of 5 per cent during the last financial year. However, the practice of issuing Fixed Penalty Notices for dropping litter and dog fouling has dropped by 13 per cent on last year. Stephen spoke to Freddie Harris from Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful, commentator Newton Emerson and Belfast City Councillor Jim Rodgers.
