Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

Harvey Belovski, rabbi at Golders Green United Synagogue:

Ìý

Most of us look forward to major life events – like a family wedding – for weeks or months.Ìý Finally, the great day arrives.Ìý It’s wonderful in the moment, although it’s over in the twinkling of an eye.Ìý There are some great photos, but the occasion has passed for good into the world of memories.Ìý The build-up can be as electrifying as the occasion itself, but the morning after can feel disappointing, perhaps even a little sad.

Ìý

In the few weeks before our daughter’s marriage last week, I started to think about how the day after would feel.Ìý We sang, cried, laughed and cavorted with family and friends as we danced Michali and Yoav into their new life together.Ìý I even danced wearing a burning hat to entertain the newly-weds, a performance that fortunately requires no skill, or sense!Ìý Please don’t try this at home.

Ìý

Until I started to think about the day after the wedding, I hadn’t realised how wise ancient Jewish practice really is.Ìý For an entire week following their wedding, a bride and groom get to continue the celebrations at meals hosted for them by friends and relatives.

Ìý

These celebrations are called sheva brochos, which refers to the blessings recited at the end of each meal.Ìý They touch on biblical themes about love, inclusivism and relationships, guiding the couple into married life.Ìý And cleverly, it only becomes a proper celebration when there are new people present – people who didn’t attend the wedding dinner or any of the previous events, adding a fresh perspective every time.Ìý The celebrations enable the couple and their families to come down from the high of the wedding and gradually re-enter normal life without the next-day crash.

Ìý

Sheva brochos are always tremendous fun.Ìý The hosts provide a good meal and act are role-models for the couple as they adjust to married life.Ìý We’ve often said that newlyweds can learn from sheva brochos at our home how not to do things.Ìý Joking apart, spending time in the homes of people in happy, affectionate relationships should rub off on us all, enabling us to see the world with new eyes.

Ìý

We hosted the last of the series yesterday with a ‘Final Fling’ breakfast.Ìý By then, the wedding was a week ago, and it was time to face reality once more.
