Pause For Thought

Pause For Thought

From the Reverend Kate Bottley:

Ìý

There’s a fine line between bravery and stupidity, Chris and I’m not sure this coming weekend I’ve negotiated that line very well.

Ìý

You see back in September as the hazy days of summer came to an end, I agreed to go for a swim, nothing too crazy in that, you think, a swim, for charity, in the chilly waters of Salford Quays, in November.Ìý I told myself it was ages away and I put it to the back of my mind, but now that ages away is here and tomorrow morning, me and my always lovely Good Morning Sunday co-presenter Jason Mohammed, will be doing it for the kids and swimming in 10-degree water for children in need.

Ìý

Now I’m not entirely daft, and in preparation I’ve been off to my local lake to meet Leon the coach and the members of the outdoor swimming club.

Ìý

The club is called ‘Swim your swim’, and it struck me that this is great advice, not just when it comes to swimming.Ìý I reckon us humans are often dreadfully keen to compare ourselves to others, but there will always be someone faster and someone who can go further. And while it’s no bad thing to push yourself, the path of constant comparison is a cul de sac of unhappiness. As Theodore Roosevelt once said, ‘Comparison is thief of Joy’.Ìý It’s a sentiment echoed in the bible, the book of Galatians warns ‘Each should test their own actions, then they can take pride in themselves alone without comparing themselves to someone else.’

Ìý

I can only walk my own path, dance my own dance and swim my own swim. So, what if the route I take isn’t quite like anyone else’s, I’m not sure it should be, after all we are all so very unique, all one offs and no two paths can ever be the same. It’s what keeps life interesting. And I’ll do my best to remember that as I go for a dip, to take it at my own pace, but still any last-minute advice from super swimmer Mr Walliams would be gratefully received, and with your permission Chris I’d love to come back next Friday and tell you how I got on. Pray for me, won’t you?
